Francisco Costa-Cabral, a senior consultant at Cruz Vilaça Advogados, personally presented to the Socialists & Democrats group of the European Parliament a report on how competition policy could contribute to tackling the cost-of-living crisis caused by inflation in house prices energy, food, and services.
This report, co-authored with Julian Nowag, a professor at the University of Lund, is based on the recent attribution by the European Central Bank of this inflation to rising corporate profit margins. Therefore, the report proposes that competition rules monitor such price increases and investigate the sectors concerned. To this end, the European Commission should use a 'vulnerable consumer' criterion when choosing the economic areas and anti-competitive effects subject to intervention, in addition to the prevailing standard of consumer well-being.
